Hello! My name is Lori Voakes, and I am excited to be teaching first grade again this year at Butler Creek!
I would like to share a little bit about myself. As a young parent, I started volunteering in a variety of capacities (soccer coach, Sunday school teacher, and parent helper). That was when I realized that working with kids was my true passion. I left my job as a paralegal and returned to school. I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching degree in 2002 from the University of Portland.
I am married and have two grown children. My husband works for a marketing company as well as serving in the National Guard as a member of the 234th Army Band. My son Paul lives in the Yakima Valley and works in the fruit industry. My Daughter Kelsey lives in Portland and currently works as an educational assistant here at Butler Creek. One of my favorite memories from Paul and Kelsey's childhood was "snuggle reading" with them each night before they went to bed.
I am committed to working with families to help each child in my classroom learn the most he or she can in first grade. I welcome parent volunteers into the classroom, but I know that is not an option for everyone. Every parent is involved with their child's education, however, through the support provided at home. Reading together nightly is especially important in first grade. Also, helping children remember their backpacks, folders, coats, etc. helps develop learning habits that will serve them well for years to come.
I look forward to a fabulous year with your children! Please feel free to approach me at any time with questions or concerns.
